  • White often recaptures on c4 with the bishop (Bxc4) in the Open Catalan, keeping the diagonal open.

Common mistakes & traps

  • In the Open Catalan (4...dxc4 5.Bg2), Black should not try to cling to the c4 pawn with ...b5 — White plays a4 and the queenside becomes a target.
  • A common Catalan trap: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.g3 dxc4 5.Bg2 c5 6.O-O Nc6 7.Qa4!, winning the pawn back immediately.

Pawn structure notes

The Catalan often features an isolated queen pawn for Black (after ...dxc4 and ...c5) or a symmetrical structure with White having the bishop pair. The g2 bishop is the key piece, influencing the centre from afar.

Name origin

Named after the Catalonia region of Spain, where it was first played in the 1929 Barcelona tournament. The name reflects the opening's origin in the Catalan chess tradition.
