Common mistakes & traps

  • In the Open Catalan (4...dxc4 5.Bg2), Black should not try to cling to the c4 pawn with ...b5 — White plays a4 and the queenside becomes a target.
  • A common Catalan trap: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.g3 dxc4 5.Bg2 c5 6.O-O Nc6 7.Qa4!, winning the pawn back immediately.

Pawn structure notes

The Catalan often features an isolated queen pawn for Black (after ...dxc4 and ...c5) or a symmetrical structure with White having the bishop pair. The g2 bishop is the key piece, influencing the centre from afar.

  • Nbd7 keeps the c6 option open and avoids some of the sharpest Catalan lines
  • This setup is solid and has been a reliable weapon for positional players
  • White still plays for e4, supported by the g2 bishop and queen
