Black captures on c4 and surrenders the centre. White recaptures with the queen and gets active piece play. The Open Catalan is the most critical and deeply analysed line.

Common mistakes & traps

  • In the Open Catalan (4...dxc4 5.Bg2), Black should not try to cling to the c4 pawn with ...b5 — White plays a4 and the queenside becomes a target.
  • A common Catalan trap: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.g3 dxc4 5.Bg2 c5 6.O-O Nc6 7.Qa4!, winning the pawn back immediately.

Pawn structure notes

The Catalan often features an isolated queen pawn for Black (after ...dxc4 and ...c5) or a symmetrical structure with White having the bishop pair. The g2 bishop is the key piece, influencing the centre from afar.

Tips

  • Black's ...dxc4 gives up the centre in exchange for quick development and counterplay
  • White's queen on c4 is active but can be a target for ...Nd5 or ...Bb7
  • The Open Catalan has been analysed to great depth at the grandmaster level
