Black develops to c5 instead of f6

Black develops the bishop to c5 instead of the knight to f6, putting immediate pressure on the d4 knight and threatening tactical ideas on f2.

Key strategic ideas

  • White opens the centre immediately with 3.d4, skipping the slow build-up of the Ruy Lopez or Italian Game.
  • After 3...exd4 4.Nxd4, White's knight sits in the centre. Black must decide how to challenge it, usually with ...Nf6 or ...Bc5.
  • In the Scotch Gambit (4.Bc4), White gives up the d4 pawn for fast development. It is a tricky weapon, especially in fast games.

Common mistakes & traps

  • After 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3, Black sometimes plays 5...Bc5? 6.Be3 Qh4? and White wins the queen with 7.Nf5! because the queen is trapped.
  • In the Scotch Gambit, if Black plays 4...Nf6 5.e5 d5 6.Bb5 Ne4?, White wins a piece with 7.Nxd4! as Black's knight on e4 is overloaded.

Pawn structure notes

White's d4 pawn trades for Black's e5 pawn, leaving White with e4 against Black's d6 or d5. White often has a central pawn advantage and the open d-file for the rook.

Tips

  • 4...Bc5 is a major alternative to the classical 4...Nf6
  • Black's queen on f6 eyes the kingside and pins the knight to the queen in some lines
  • White often retreats the knight with Nb3 or exchanges with Be3 to simplify
