Structural imbalance from move 4

White trades bishop for knight, doubling Black's pawns, then snatches the e5 pawn. Black gets the bishop pair as long-term compensation.

Key strategic ideas

  • The bishop on b5 pins Black's knight to the king. If White trades bishop for knight (Bxc6), Black's pawns get doubled, creating a long-term weakness.
  • After Black plays ...a6, White retreats the bishop to a4 and keeps pressure on the centre. The plan is to build with c3 and d4, creating a strong pawn centre.
  • In the Berlin Defense, Black immediately attacks e4 with Nf6. The resulting endgame is very solid for Black and is used by world champions to draw with Black.

Common mistakes & traps

  • When White captures on c6, Black should recapture with the d-pawn (7...dxc6), not the b-pawn. Taking with b7 leaves the a-pawn stranded and the queenside weak.
  • In the Marshall Attack, White must not grab the pawn carelessly. Accepting with 9.exd5 Nxd5 10.Nxe5? gives Black a ferocious attack with 10...Nxe5 11.Rxe5 c6.

Pawn structure notes

The centre is defined by e4 against e5. White aims for a d4-e4 duo. Black often plays ...d6 to support e5. In the Exchange Variation, Black gets doubled c-pawns but gains the two bishops.

  • White aims for a favourable endgame with superior pawn structure
  • Fischer used this variation repeatedly against Spassky in the 1972 World Championship
