Supporting d5 with the c-pawn

Black supports d5 with ...c6, maintaining the pawn and keeping the c8 bishop free. One of the most solid and popular responses to the Queen's Gambit.

Key strategic ideas

  • White offers the c-pawn to tempt Black into giving up the centre. If Black captures (2...dxc4), White can play e3 and take control of d5.
  • The Queen's Gambit Declined (2...e6) is the classical answer. Black keeps the centre solid and develops piece by piece.
  • White's plan: build a centre with d4 and e3, develop bishops actively, and create pressure on Black's queenside.

Common mistakes & traps

  • In the Queen's Gambit Accepted, Black should not try to hold the c4 pawn with ...b5. White can play a4! and the pawn comes back with interest, leaving Black's queenside weak.
  • In the Declined, the Cambridge Springs Defense (3...Nf6 4.Bg5 Nbd7 5.e3 c6 6.Nf3 Qa5) catches unprepared White players. The queen pins the knight on f3.

Pawn structure notes

White's centre has d4 and e3 against Black's d5 and e6. The tension on d5 and c4 can resolve in many ways. A common result is the Carlsbad structure, where White has a queenside pawn majority.

Tips

  • Unlike the QGD, the c8 bishop is not locked behind the e6 pawn
  • White plays a4 to prevent ...b5 from holding the extra pawn
  • The Slav is famously solid - a favourite of Kramnik and Gelfand
