White opens lines with f4 instead of the standard d4. The resulting positions give White open files for the rooks and development lead in exchange for the piece.

Key strategic ideas

  • After 4.Nxe5 Nxe5 5.d4 Ng6 6.e5, White chases both black knights back to their starting squares. This gives White a huge space advantage for the sacrificed piece.
  • White's plan: use the big centre (pawns on c4, d4, e5) to trap Black's pieces and launch a kingside attack.
  • Black's best defence is to give back the knight and focus on development. Trying to hold the extra piece leads to positional suffocation.

Common mistakes & traps

  • The main trap: after 4.Nxe5 Nxe5 5.d4 Nc6 6.e5 Ng8 7.Bc4, if Black plays 7...d6? 8.Bxf7+! Kxf7 9.e6+ wins the queen.
  • Black who tries to keep the extra knight with 5...Ng6 6.e5 Ng8 7.Bc4 d5 8.exd6 Qxd6 gets a reasonable position. The key is not to over defend.

Pawn structure notes

White's massive pawn centre (c4, d4, e5) against Black's single pawn on e5. White has a 3-to-1 pawn majority in the centre but is down a knight. The centre restricts Black's pieces but can become a target.

Tips

  • 5.f4 attacks the knight on e5 and opens the f-file for attacking play
  • After 6.e5 Ng8, Black's knight is chased back to its original square
  • White ends up with a huge centre and active pieces but is down a knight
