Black answers 1.e4 with 1...e6, preparing ...d5. The French leads to closed, strategic battles with clear plans for both sides. Black counterattacks on the queenside while White pushes on the kingside.

Black pins the Nc3 immediately, creating sharp imbalances. One of the most theoretically complex responses to 1.e4.
