Sicilian with an extra tempo

White plays a Sicilian structure but with colours reversed and an extra tempo. Active piece play with a fianchettoed bishop.

Key strategic ideas

  • White starts with 1.c4, controlling d5 from the side. The opening is very flexible and can turn into many different types of positions.
  • A common plan is to fianchetto the king's bishop (g3 and Bg2). This puts quiet pressure on the centre and leads to slow, strategic play.
  • The English often leads to symmetrical pawn structures. Small advantages like a better bishop or control of d5 can decide the game.

Common mistakes & traps

  • After 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.g3 Bb4! pins the knight and threatens ...e4. This tricky line can catch White off guard.
  • The Four Knights line (1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.d4 exd4 5.Nxd4 Bb4 6.Bg5 h6 7.Bh5) requires Black to know the correct defence to avoid a bad position.

Pawn structure notes

White has c4 and d3 against Black's e5 and d6. The g3-Bg2 setup aims for long-term central pressure. The structure is flexible and often transposes into d4 or e4 openings.

  • White has the "Sicilian" setup but with White to move - effectively a tempo up
  • The Bg2 bishop targets the long diagonal and can be very powerful
  • A favourite of Réti, Botvinnik, and many modern players
