The main line setup with 4.Bd3 and 5.c3

The traditional Colle setup sees White building a solid center with c3 and Nbd2, then breaking with e4.

Key strategic ideas

Common mistakes & traps

Pawn structure notes

White typically has pawns on d4, e3, and c3 forming a solid pyramid. The kingside is well-defended by the bishop on d3. After the e4 break, White often gets a strong center and kingside attacking chances.

Tips

  • White's setup is the same against most Black responses — d4, Nf3, e3, Bd3, c3, Nbd2
  • The e4 break is White's main plan, opening lines for the bishops
  • After e4, White gets active piece play with the bishop pair
