Positional equality

White exchanges in the centre, reaching a symmetrical structure. Less ambitious but avoids Black's main theoretical preparation.

Key strategic ideas

  • Black plays 1...c6 and then 2...d5. Unlike the French Defense, Black's light-squared bishop can develop outside the pawn chain to f5 or g4.
  • White usually builds a centre with e4 and d4. Black fights back with ...c5 and ...e6, aiming for a solid but active position.
  • The Caro-Kann is famous for being hard to crack. Black rarely gets checkmated early and often wins the endgame by outlasting White.

Common mistakes & traps

  • In the Advance Variation (3.e5 Bf5), White sometimes tries 4.g4? to chase the bishop away. But Black can respond 4...Be4 5.f3? Qh4+ and White is in big trouble.
  • After 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4, a common mistake is 4...Bf5 5.Ng3 Bg6 6.h4 h6 7.h5 Bh7, letting White gain space for free on the kingside.

Pawn structure notes

After 3.exd5 cxd5, the pawn structure is symmetrical with both sides having a central duo. White pushes on the queenside with the minority attack. Black's d5 and e6 pawns are very hard to break.

Tips

  • White develops Bd3 and Bf4 to control the e5 square
  • The position is compared to a reversed Queen's Gambit Exchange
  • Black has easy equality but must stay active to avoid drifting into passivity
